The challenge of choosing what to cook

Even those who enjoy cooking face daily indecision about what to make. Despite the abundance of recipes available online, the experience can often be confusing as one has to navigate through various websites, compare ingredients, and adapt what is already available.

The solution

The proposal was to develop a platform that understands what the user has and suggests what to cook.

By typing, pasting, or uploading a list of ingredients, the system automatically recognizes the items, cross-references with a database of the largest recipe sites, and presents suggestions by relevance displaying image, preparation time, and main ingredients.

The journey was designed to be light and fluid: add ingredients → view recipes → explore → cook.

Research and key insights

Before designing the interface, I sought to understand how people decide what to cook.

Before designing the interface, I sought to understand how people decide what to cook.

The main points observed were:

  • The difficulty of remembering what can be done with what is already at home.

  • The excess of options and the exhausting navigation on different sites.

  • The desire for a quick, visual, and practical experience.

  • A large part of the users may be vegans or people with dietary restrictions.

  • People tend to select the type of cuisine before the dish.
